Gunter Sachs – The Art of the Camera

Photography, Film and Collection

For more than half a century Gunter Sachs was not only one of the most colorful, but also one of the most misinterpreted personalities in public life. As much as his extrovert lifestyle made him a “lover of beautiful women” in public perception, so did he devote his entire career as a “lover of the fine arts”. Art collector, patron, gallery owner, curator, friend of the arts and artists, but above all successful photographer and filmmaker, he led his life not only for art, but undoubtedly always with it.

On display are numerous photographs by Gunter Sachs presented in the context of his photography collection, which include works from the 1930s to the present by well-known artists such as Andreas Feininger and Andy Warhol. The exhibition is rounded off with works by renowned artists from his famous private collection, which are related to his own photographic work and disclose art historical influences in his works.

Vision and Work

On July 18, 2025, the Buchheim Museum opened the largest retrospective to date dedicated to Max Pechstein. The exhibition Max Pechstein – Vision and Work, on view until October 26, 2025, offers more than just the iconic images of Expressionism: it provides a comprehensive insight into a multifaceted oeuvre that, in its search for harmony between humanity and nature, continues to resonate today. Paintings, watercolors, drawings, and prints form the core of the show, complemented by letters, photographs, and preparatory sketches. The works span Pechstein’s early years, his time with the Brücke group, the masterpieces of the 1910s to early 1930s, and his late work of the 1950s.

Max Pechstein – Vision and Work is a collaboration between the Buchheim Museum, the Institute for Cultural Exchange, the Max Pechstein Foundation, and the Art Collections of Zwickau.
