Supernatural

Sculptural Visions of the Body

Thanks to technological developments in biogenetics and artificial intelligence, humankind will increasingly be able to transform all living things, nature, animals, plants as well as the human body itself, with far-reaching consequences. The exhibition Supernatural. Sculptural Visions of the Body addresses the future of the body in the era of the Anthropocene. How will our bodies look like? Who or what are we going to be? What kind of environment will we live in?

The exhibition Supernatural offers a variety of possible answers explored by visionary contemporary artists like Isa Genzken, Sam Jinks or Anna Uddenberg. These not only exemplify the impact of the digital revolution and genetic engineering on “posthumans” and the environment but also illustrate how increasingly blurred the line between nature and culture has become. In turn, these technological innovations are also evermore changing the face and future of sculpture. 3D printing, robotics and synthetic biology have all shaped new artistic creation processes.

Four thematic areas – Human-technological-Metamorphoses, Hybrid Others, Post Nature and Artist 4.0 – encourage us to deal with questions of our time in a variety of ways by means of post-human sculpture.

Vision and Work

On July 18, 2025, the Buchheim Museum opened the largest retrospective to date dedicated to Max Pechstein. The exhibition Max Pechstein – Vision and Work, on view until October 26, 2025, offers more than just the iconic images of Expressionism: it provides a comprehensive insight into a multifaceted oeuvre that, in its search for harmony between humanity and nature, continues to resonate today. Paintings, watercolors, drawings, and prints form the core of the show, complemented by letters, photographs, and preparatory sketches. The works span Pechstein’s early years, his time with the Brücke group, the masterpieces of the 1910s to early 1930s, and his late work of the 1950s.

Max Pechstein – Vision and Work is a collaboration between the Buchheim Museum, the Institute for Cultural Exchange, the Max Pechstein Foundation, and the Art Collections of Zwickau.
