Dennis Stock

Made in USA

The photographer Dennis Stock, born in New York in 1928, became internationally known at the end of the 1950s with his photographs of James Dean. The exhibition, comprising 119 b/w photographs, provided an outline of his work in the years between 1951 and 1971. Dennis Stock accompanied the shooting of numerous films and his pictures captured the world of fame and stardom. He documented the American jazz scene and its great personalities, as well as the classical American myths.
The dream of liberty, mobility and individuality – the „American way of life“ – is the consistent subject of his work. His photographs depict the world of the American counter culture: colorful festivals in the Southern States, hippies, bikers, and the most diverse ways of life and culture.

The exhibition is no longer available.

Vision and Work

On July 18, 2025, the Buchheim Museum opened the largest retrospective to date dedicated to Max Pechstein. The exhibition Max Pechstein – Vision and Work, on view until October 26, 2025, offers more than just the iconic images of Expressionism: it provides a comprehensive insight into a multifaceted oeuvre that, in its search for harmony between humanity and nature, continues to resonate today. Paintings, watercolors, drawings, and prints form the core of the show, complemented by letters, photographs, and preparatory sketches. The works span Pechstein’s early years, his time with the Brücke group, the masterpieces of the 1910s to early 1930s, and his late work of the 1950s.

Max Pechstein – Vision and Work is a collaboration between the Buchheim Museum, the Institute for Cultural Exchange, the Max Pechstein Foundation, and the Art Collections of Zwickau.
