Engineers of the Sea

The Cousteau Society - 50 Years of Coral Reef Expeditions

The exhibition included a selection of exclusive photographs taken by the photographer Roberto Rinaldi while taking part in the latest coral reef expedition of the Cousteau Society, which set sail in 2003 – 50 years after the first expedition of its founder Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Supported by the International Watch Company (IWC) Schaffhausen, this project focused on the registration of the current conditions of the reefs to promote their protection and conservation.

The differentiated selection of works as well as the presentation of the subject on a specially designed exhibition architecture differed from past photo exhibitions of the underwater world. 9 oversized backlit photographs, which presented the coral reef in an unusual way as delicate „engineers“ of the sea, framed the exhibition. The visitor was surrounded by the corals. In the central part of the exhibition, unpublished black and white photographs of Cousteau‘s expeditions of the 1950s and 60s were presented along with new color photographs of the latest expedition of 2003/2004. Completed with selected quotes, the pictures documented the fascinating development of marine research, diving techniques and underwater photography since 1953.

The exhibition is no longer available.

Vision and Work

On July 18, 2025, the Buchheim Museum opened the largest retrospective to date dedicated to Max Pechstein. The exhibition Max Pechstein – Vision and Work, on view until October 26, 2025, offers more than just the iconic images of Expressionism: it provides a comprehensive insight into a multifaceted oeuvre that, in its search for harmony between humanity and nature, continues to resonate today. Paintings, watercolors, drawings, and prints form the core of the show, complemented by letters, photographs, and preparatory sketches. The works span Pechstein’s early years, his time with the Brücke group, the masterpieces of the 1910s to early 1930s, and his late work of the 1950s.

Max Pechstein – Vision and Work is a collaboration between the Buchheim Museum, the Institute for Cultural Exchange, the Max Pechstein Foundation, and the Art Collections of Zwickau.
