Mit seinen Fotografien hielt er die Spuren der amerikanischen Depression in den 1930er und 40er Jahren in beklemmender Direktheit fest. Seine Aufnahmen der New Yorker High Society sind nicht weniger drastisch, sie geraten zu einer sarkastischen Stellungnahme gegen\u00fcber der reichen Bev\u00f6lkerungsschicht, ebenso wie seine in den 50er Jahren mittels spezieller Linsen verzerrten Fotos von Prominenten und Hollywood-Stars. Die Intensit\u00e4t seiner Bilder basiert auf einem schonungslosen Realismus und expressiven Inszenierungen. Gerne setzt er starke Blitzlichter ein und bewirkt damit dramatische Licht-Schatten-Wirkungen und harte Schwarzwei\u00df-Kontraste.
