Weegee – The Famous

1935 – 1960

Weegee‘s photographs form an impressive document of modern city life – in all its brutality, violence, and pitilessness. Through his photography, he recorded the traces the Great Depression of the 1930s and 40s left behind. No less drastic are his photographs of New York‘s high society. They constitute a sarcastic comment on the rich, which is also true for his pictures of famous people and Hollywood stars that he took in the 1950s and for which he used specific distorting lenses.

The intensity of his photographs results from a harsh realism and expressive arrangements. Weegee prefers using strong flash-lights to cause dramatic light shade effects and sharp b/w-contrasts. This had already been a typical feature of his work when, as a street photographer, he traveled through the East Side of New York with a pony to photograph children for a few cents.

La Bohème

Toulouse-Lautrec and the Masters of Montmartre

WELCOME TO MONTMARTRE! To mark the beginning of 2019, the Institute for Cultural Exchange, in collaboration with the Galerie Stihl and the Musée d’Ixelles will present the extensive lithographic work of Toulouse-Lautrec from 26 January to 22 April 2019. From the streets of Montmartre to the exhibition galleries of the City of Waiblingen: Toulouse-Lautrec, like no one else, was able to capture the attitude towards the Parisian nightlife  through reduced, but expressive forms as well as intense coloring. The relatively new medium of the poster turned gradually into a recognized art form, which radically changed the urban landscape during the Belle Époque. Accompanied by works of Lautrec’s processors and contemporaries, like Alfons Mucha, Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen or Félix Vallotton, the exhibition La Bohème. Toulouse-Lautrec and the Masters of Montmartre gives a wide-ranging insight into the fascinating world of poster art around 1900.

Exhibition opening: 25 January, 19:00 at Galerie Stihl Waiblingen
